FOR American jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, knowing when not to play is as important as knowing when to play. Speaking on how he interacts with pianist and long-time colleague William Henderson, he said: "Sometimes I might get in his way," adding, "You don't want to overplay. You want the music to flow."

Damien Hills

Damien Hills

"I first met Damien in 1998 when he was completing his music degree at the Hobart Conservatorium. I was a visiting lecturer and was immediately impressed by his playing and desire to soak up information to help him develop as a saxophone player. Since then he has moved from his Selmer tenor sax to a Keilwerth SX90R tenor.

"David Temby has made a quality breakthrough in instruments and has obviously put his heart and soul into their development. I happily recommend Temby instruments and give him full credit for getting it right. It is the instrument I recommend my students to purchase. They are free blowing right down to bottom Bb and consistently in tune throughout the full range of the saxophone. My personal favourite is my Temby Vintage tenor sax.

Rob Mason

Rob Mason

Rob has been playing sax through most of his schooling in Tasmania and has been researching the "ideal" tenor for him to take him to new levels of playing while studying at the University of Tasmania Conservatorium. He visited David Temby today and after a few hours of working through different options, Rob finally settled on the same model Temby tenor that Pharoah Sanders and many other professional sax players have - Temby Custom Model with silver plated bell, keys and neck and black nickel plated body.

"If a full, rich and controllable sound is important to you then the Temby sax range is perfect. The intonation and action of the horns is equal to any I have played and they cost half as much."

I recently replaced my Selmer SA80 soprano for a Temby Discovery curved soprano and couldn't be happier with my choice. The Temby soprano outperforms the selmer in pitch and tone. It is perfectly suited for my role as lead alto / soprano in the upcoming Motherhsip Orchestra recording as it responds quickly and dynamically to the demands of a big band. I highly recommended this Temby instrument.

Michael Favreau

Michael Favreau"Great free blowing horn! Especially good for contemporary and R&B work. Flexible in all registers and great pitch centre".
Quote from Michael Favreau (Professional Saxophonist: Urbana, IL U.S.A) on playing the Black & Silver Temby "Custom" alto.

Richard Maegraith

I have played a number of Temby Australia tenor, alto & soprano saxophones. All of these instruments, in each of their models, had an ease of sound production, accurate intonation & uniformity of sound that I have scarcely found in other makes of saxophones. The tenor & alto models that I eventually selected are both Temby Vintage Series saxophones.

I was immediately drawn to the dark sound they produced; the low notes from Bb to C# all spoke with the same amount of air pressure & produced a consistent tone. The C# was as strong as the Bb, the B wasn?t muffled AND the D was in tune!

Sharon Wallace

HI David.

I wanted to thank you for the fantastic opportunity Lachie had on Saturday morning to choose his saxophone, not only with you but to purchase such a beautiful instrument made by yourself. He is indeed a lucky young man and fate certainly smiled upon us.

It was probably obvious to you that I/we were complete ignorami as to who you are and what you do when we arrived like a bunch of country yokels on Saturday morning. Now having, er, peeked at your website I realise the magnitude of my ignorance.

Thanks again. looking forward to an ongoing association (amy wants a trumpet now! we may wait a little while I think!)

regards, Sharon Wallace

Lyn Craine

Lyn CraineI can play anything on my Temby Vintage Tenor Sax - whether it's dixie, classical, cheezy or smoky - it goes where I want to go for more than 40 hours every week. It has a really flexible tone range.

Rob Vincs

Rob VincsThe Temby flutes - I have too much fun playing them. The Temby Altos are easy to play. The centre of the tone is there straight up. His design allows for natural hand position essential to the development of a solid technique.

Bob Venier's Temby Vintage "BV" Trumpet

Bob Venier's Temby Vintage BV Trumpet

Bob Venier now plays his own Temby Vintage Custom "BV" model trumpet with Marcinkiewicz 3/3c concert hall mouthpiece.

David Temby "When i was a young player, I was captivated by Bob Venier playing beautiful lyrical jazz lines. He has remained my absolute favourite flugelhorn player since. Bob has been perhaps Australia's most versatile professional trumpet player for decades now, and his playing is as precise and heartfelt as ever. To have Bob playing one of my horns is a dream come true. He play tested a number of Temby models including cryo treated silver custom models, but finally settled on a custom raw brass "Vintage" instrument which we then modified to become his own signature model. His sound is magical on this horn - thanks Bob!"

Tim Priddy

Tim Priddy plays Temby Custom Cryo trumpet Detroit Michigan trumpet pro - Tim Priddy spent the day with David Temby in February 2010 and ended up loving this horn so much that he purchased it.

Normally, after a 41 year career playing trumpet, one could usually assume that a player would have found the correct set-up (mouthpiece and horn). David Temby proved me wrong on that one!

I have played virtually every kind of trumpet on this planet, from classical to jazz, both old and new, boutique and off-the-shelf. While I find there is a use for each of these horns, not until playing a Temby trumpet did I settle for one horn that really can do it all. I am a commercial player—a player that relies on one horn to play a variety of styles and genres. The Temby Professional trumpet in silverplate gives the player a step up on the competition in a variety of ways:

Paul Thorne

I have tried all three types of the Temby trumpet and as you would expect, the finishes have a bearing on the tonal quality but some things remain constant. These horns are well balanced and finished to a very high standard. They are very comfortable to play and the intonation was spot on in all the horns I tried. They lock up well between intervals and are very even over the whole range of the trumpet.

The overall sound of my Temby flute is rich, smooth and even. It blends superbly with Cello, Harp or any instruments - so whether I am playing with a chamber ensemble, in an orchestra or even with a rock band I'm confident that I will be happy with my sound.

Sally Ford

Sally Ford playing her Temby flute

"Sally expects and achieves an enormous amount from her flute - being an authentic exponent of Cuban music, she needs her flute to be able to play in the extreme high register with ease, clarity, accuracy and volume. She has been playing one of my Artist series flutes for a few years and has recently changed her headjoint to one of my handmade pieces. Just when I thought that her playing was at a pinnacle - she is now producing an even more exciting result"  David Temby
